How did each of the interview scenarios change the circumstances of the conversation? What worked what didn’t?

The first scenario was definitely challenging, first of all, drawing with the trackpad on my laptop is so much more difficult than drawing by hand, and given that difficulty we then had to have a conversation almost like a Pictionary game - not an easy feat! This was overcame by focusing on drawing one guilty pleasure each as we also didn’t have much time to draw anything more. The following scenarios were by text, mic only, and mic with video. The full video call was probably the closest thing you could have to an actual conversation so that was best for being the most fluid, but I personally preferred interviewing by text. Talking by text means that you have your entire conversation recorded word for word and I think that’s most beneficial for research for this project.

What have you learnt about maintaining empathy with your client and uncovering information to inform your project?

All scenarios but the first one work for maintaining empathy, because they all have some way of expressing human emotion, whether it’s by emoji, tone of voice or facial expression. I still think text is the best way to uncover information because it gives the interviewee time to think about their answers and give you information that it thought out and more descriptive that you would get in a video/voice call.

Did you have any difficulties in sustaining the conversation and how did you over come them?

The only time we might have had difficulties sustaining the conversation was in the voice call because we occasionally had awkward silences, but these were easily overcome by jumping in with another question in those gaps. I do think that these silences were only because we couldn’t see each other’s facial expression so we couldn’t ‘read the room’ to see where the conversation was going - one of the disadvantages of voice calls.
